Don’t beat them tight. The wire needs to move between them. It will make it stronger and better for tensioning. Same with T post ties.

I was taught to do it all with the fence tool: hold the staple just like you did, but then swing it into the post to make it stick. Then flip the tool around and use the built in hammering surface (the flat square part) to finish driving it in.
