Jordan Peele showcased the model a decade ago: there are people out there who are creative, and understand the culture, and are popular; when selecting who to give your money to, it’s important to care about the first two WAY MORE than the last one, even if it’s a foregone conclusion that the last one has to factor in.

Everyone is trying to say this is something new but people just like good things. Obsession was a very good horror movie. Backrooms was a very well crafted artistic vision of some internet IP. PTA and Bryan Singer and Tarantino and others in the 90s had very popular films when they first started out as well. Good trumps everything.

Part of the issue I feel was assuming online success translated to movie/tv success. Most popular online content does not make for a good movie or tv show

Hard disagree on the Beast Games example. Wife’s family has never watched a Mr Beast video (or even knew who he is). They gathered together weekly (as one would to watch a tv show) to see every new episode of it for both seasons. New audience is there, it’s just a different demographic we don’t usually interact with.
