Dagon is not a fish god. her was originally a grain/fertility god in Canaan and Mesopotamia. his name was Dagan meaning grain. later on around 390AD Jerome of Stridon broke it up and used the Hebrew words Dag and Aon meaning fish and sorrow to call him fish of sorrow. it was later enforced by people like Rashi, David kimhi, and John Milton then in the 1800s archeologists uncovered depictions of spirits like the oannes and assumed it was dagon. but when archeologists cracked the cuneiform tablets from ugarit and Mesopotamia they discovered that the name was much older then the Hebrew word for fish and belonged to a completely different semitic language
