Prayer is the greatest act of worship after the two testimonies of faith, and it is the blessed connection between the servant and his Lord. Allah, the Exalted, made it obligatory for Muslims five times a day and night, so that it becomes a means for purifying the heart, calming the soul, and forgiving sins. The correct prayer is the one a Muslim performs with humility and tranquility, following the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ in its words and actions. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Perform the prayer as you have seen me perform it.” Prayer begins with preparing for it by being in a state of purity and performing wudu correctly, covering the awrah, and facing the qiblah. Then the Muslim brings the intention of prayer to his heart without needing to say it out loud. After that, he begins with the opening takbir, saying: “Allahu Akbar,” raising his hands in line with his shoulders or ears. Then he recites the opening supplication (du‘a al‑istiftah) if he wishes, and after it he recites Surah al‑Fatiha in every rak‘ah, as it is a fundamental pillar of the prayer. Then he recites whatever he can of the Noble Qur’an in the first two rak‘ahs. After reciting, he bows (ruku‘), submitting to Allah, placing his hands on his knees, and says: “Subhana Rabbiyal ‘Azim” (Glory be to my Lord, the Magnificent) with calmness and without haste. Then he rises from the bowing, standing upright, and says: “Allah hears those who praise Him.” Then: “Our Lord, to You is all praise.” After that, he prostrates (sujud) on the seven body parts: the forehead with the nose, the two hands, the two knees, and the two feet, and says: “Subhana Rabbiyal A‘la” (Glory be to my Lord, the Most High). He should pay attention to calmness and humility in his prostration, as prostration is one of the closest states in which the servant is near his Lord. Then he sits between the two prostrations and says: “My Lord, forgive me.” Then he performs the second prostration, and these actions are repeated in all rak‘ahs according to the number of rak‘ahs of the prayer. In the final sitting, he recites the Tashahhud and the Ibrahimic prayer, then concludes his prayer with the salam to the right and to the left, saying: “Assalamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullah.” Among the most important pillars of the prayer, without which it is invalid: Standing when able, the opening takbir, reciting al‑Fatiha, bowing (ruku‘), standing up from it, prostration (sujud), sitting between the two prostrations, calmness, the final Tashahhud, sending prayers upon the Prophet ﷺ, and the salam. Among the recommended Sunnahs of the prayer: Raising the hands when saying takbir and bowing, placing the right hand over the left on the chest, reciting the opening supplication, reflecting on the verses, and complete humility during the prayer. Prayer is not just movements a person performs; it is a great act of worship that rectifies the heart, comforts the soul, increases faith, and brings the servant closer to Allah, the Exalted.
