Angry = bad. Hurt = bad. Anxious = bad. But... Happy = safe. Cheerful = safe. Easy-going = safe. (not necessarily 100% safe, but safer than the "negative" emotions) And that's where the masking comes from. It's not that you genuinely feel better. It's that your nervous system learns that if they see how you really feel, something bad might happen. So the second you hear the garage door, the keys in the lock, the footsteps, your emotions get shoved "underground."
