@jake.pnw: You Will Not Believe What This Tiny Fossil Came From ‼️😱 At first, it just looks like a small round piece of bone locked inside Oregon coast rock. But this little fossil is actually part of an ancient animal’s spine. A fish vertebra. It was found in the Astoria Formation near Newport, Oregon, which dates back to the Miocene, around 15 to 20 million years ago. Back then, this area wasn’t the coastline we see today. It was an ancient marine environment filled with fish, crabs, clams, snails, sharks, rays, and other sea life. A fossil fish vertebra like this can be hard to identify down to one exact species, because many fish have similar-looking backbone bones. But based on the Astoria Formation, it could have come from an ancient bony fish, possibly something related to rockfish, cod-like fish, flatfish, herring, salmon relatives, or other marine fish living in the Pacific at that time. It could also be from a larger predatory fish, depending on the size and shape of the vertebra. That’s what makes fossils like this so interesting. You’re not just holding a random bone. You’re holding evidence of an ancient fish that swam through Oregon’s ocean millions of years before humans ever walked these beaches. And somehow, this tiny piece of its spine survived inside stone. #Learning #Fossils #nature #education

Not to be that person, but the animal is a vertebrate not vertebrae. Vertebrae are the bones of the spine. It’s a vertebrate because it has vertebrae 😊
