It's genuinely unfair to the people who actually didn't have breakfast because there's no reason to engage in a hypothetical if you're already experiencing said hypothetical in real life. The only way to fail it is if you DID have breakfast today and then said "oh well I did have breakfast today so that didn't happen" or something like that

if you didn't eat breakfast then saying that is fully valid. at that point you have no indication that the situation is imaginary, since it's your reality. it is at this point that the questioner needs to pivot to a different scenario.

if you didn't have breakfast then the situation isn't made up or imaginary it's your reality so replying with "i didn't eat breakfast" implies it's impossible to imagine because you didn't have breakfast this morning that wouldn't be imagined but memory

There is a caveat that if someone actually didn’t have breakfast, then it wouldn’t be a hypothetical situation and therefore wouldn’t warrant a conditional perfect tense response - it is therefore a leading question and not best to assess someone’s cognitive ability.

it depends on the situation tho if you randomly walk up to someone and ask that of course they'll answer with I did it's just a polite answer thast just muscle memory but having an actual conversation flips that you're more aware and might take your time to answer because you're invested in the conversation

What are you even saying? Valid answers are: "I didn't eat breakfast" - implies that they would feel exactly the same as they do now "I don't eat breakfast" - implies that they don't mind, so they again feel the same "I'd feel bad" The only wrong answer is: "But I did eat breakfast" - this is the only answer that doesn't answer the question and doesn't understand the hypothetical

The comeback of “ha! It’s a hypothetical. You’re stupid for answering like it’s reality.” is stupid because the person answering completely knows and understands that it’s a hypothetical when they answer “well I didn’t have breakfast this morning.” In reality it’s more a measure of YOUR social understanding, intelligence, and ability to pick up on underlining subtext as the person asking the question because the answer, “well I didn’t have breakfast this morning,” implies the same answer as, “I’d feel exactly as I do now,” and on top of it the question isn’t hypothetical because not having breakfast is the genuine reality for them.

I don’t see how saying you didn’t eat breakfast is the wrong answer. Yes the question is hypothetical but if I’m actually experiencing what the hypothetical question is asking why shouldn’t I use what I’m experiencing to answer?
