@thetimes: 🗣️ The birth rate in England and Wales is now at its lowest in half a century, news that ought to startle us into a new existential question. Is the human race — so far the cockroach of mammals, a super-breeder in every hostile environment from the Arctic to the Sahara — no match for the modern age? The decline in British birth rates is accelerating ahead of predictions, forcing us to face up to a new reason for the baby drought. The government has dangled childcare vouchers and other baby incentives for couples but the problem may be way upstream: young people are not having children because they are struggling to form relationships in the first place. The new drought is in hooking up and having sex. Our young people are voluntarily single — ie unrelated to a shock of war — at a rate never before seen in modern history. Do we truly prefer being alone? Even at the cost of species renewal? Are we humans at a transition point between breeding like randy romantic penguins and breeding like the woebegone lonely panda? | ✍️ Helen Rumbleow Click the link to read more #fertility #birthrates #women #Relationship #uknews
Let’s be real, it’s not young people’s failing relationships, it’s the cost of kids and the difficulty of pregnancy, plus the state of the world currently that puts me off having kids. I have a stable relationship but it’ll be years before we can buy a house and have enough cash flow to even think about kids and we both work well paid full time jobs and have uni degrees.

it's not affordable! Also, with the way things are post 2020 people feel very uncertain about the kind of world their theoretical children would inherit.

I’m a teacher, I work part time. My mat leave was 40% below minimum wage. With the funded nursery hours (30) I still pay £300/400 per month in substitutes . If I wanted to work more to earn more than 3 day’s I would have to pay £130 per day for nursery fees. The math doesn’t work 🫠 it would leave me earning £20 after tax

We are broke yes. But we also just don't have the time. We are always working or cleaning or buying groceries or going to appointments. At the end of the world day I'm just tired.
