This animation shows how London's population has changed borough by borough since 1950, along with the most popular baby boy name over the years. In 1950, London was almost entirely white, and the top boy name was David. Large-scale migration from the Caribbean, South Asia and Africa began in the 1950s and 60s, and the change picked up speed after that. By the 1991 census, London was about 80% white. Newham, Brent and Tower Hamlets were already below 65%. After 2000 the pace picked up even more. In 2011, white Londoners dropped below 60% for the first time, and by 2021 the figure was about 54%. Today Newham, Harrow, Redbridge and Brent are well under 40%, while Richmond, Bromley and Havering in the outer suburbs remain the whitest boroughs. The baby names tell their own story. David gave way to Paul in the 1970s, then Christopher, Thomas, Jack and Oliver. Since 2012, Muhammad has been the most popular boy name in London. Borough figures for 1991 and 2021 are from the census. Earlier years and 2026 are estimates, since the census did not ask about ethnicity before 1991. Boy names before 2012 are the top names for England and Wales, and from 2012 on they are London's top names.#immigration #immigrants #demographic #unitedkingdom #london
