My patient Denise has been hearing mixed advice on whether she should be side planking on one side, the other, or both due to her scoliosis. 👇   Her spine has 42 degrees of scoliosis, her age is 50, she’s never had surgery on her spine, and, she feels pretty darn good (to give many of you hope)! 🙌    I also explained to her that she has functional scoliosis - causing her left leg being about 1.5” longer than her right. She was stunned and said that nobody’s ever told her that, which blew me away because I would think that Stevie Wonder would have seen that from a football field away. 👀 Her and I will be discussing strategies that account for her leg length in future sessions. @pontak04    I decided for her that her goal of side planking was to strengthen her spine into a more aligned position, which means actively reducing the side curve of her back by focusing on right side planks. 💪   First, I took her through the entire plank from a standing position as it’s much easier to find the ideal position here rather than struggling to hold yourself up on your side while trying to use muscles that haven’t been used in years!   Here’s the order that worked best for her:    - Reduce Rotation: Rotate the left hip forward and the left shoulder back - Straighten the curve: Shift left and then tilt right - Scoop the left shoulder blade out of the way   She also left my office with a year membership in the app and she's currently completing the Back & Core Program, which is the foundational program for aligning your spine (correcting scoliosis). 🔥 I'd recommend you beginning your journey in the app as she did, with the Back & Core Program.
