Hi guys commenting. I’m from Puerto Rico where every house use this type of air conditioners. Yes, this is exactly how they are cleaned. It won’t damage the unit. I’ve had mine for yearsss and they get washed like this every 5 months to keep them cleaned from dust and mildew
