@thrivingwithhannah: Would love to hear what you think about the seemingly increasing infighting? It’s all pretty pointless IMO #homeeducation #homeschooling #unschooling #homeschoolmom
I’m new to it all due to ebsa was being raised to prosecution and the amount of opinions and advice etc is so overwhelming of knowing what’s right and if you are doing enough as we don’t do much official sit down learning due to asd/adhd/pda

This exactly. I have a similar journey and eldest at the same stage with my eldest. The community is so different. I really hate the low quality commercialisation of home ed.

With loads of tutors hoping onto it the bit I’ve found when I don’t specify home Ed it’s like £25ph but when I do it shoots up to £45-£50ph even after school hours(locally) I don’t understand that x

Just wanted to leave this here as someone who is pro-unschooling and a former school refuser: I point blank refused to go to school from the age of 12ish onwards - I’d either refuse and my dad would keep me home or I’d pretend to go and then sit in the town library or a cafe all day. I passed all my exams and excelled at the subjects I was interested in. I scraped a C in maths and science and probably missed out on a lot of teaching about those subjects. I’m now 40 and I’ve taught myself the parts of maths and physics I’ve needed for my adult life. Being an autodidact and unschooling myself gave me more life skills and learning skills than school ever did. I have a PhD now and I’m a teacher myself (radical pedagogy baby), and I would have been even better prepared had I had a pro-unschooling parent. Teaching kids how to be curious and learn = the only skill they need to teach themselves literally anything.

My daughter just turned 5, I haven’t registered her in any school as my plan has always been to home educate. It’s very daunting at the moment. I feel there’s a lot of misinformation where the home education bill is concerned. I’m staying positive because I truly believe the current system isn’t working for a big majority of children it’s just hard when as you say some people have very strong opinions and people give advice that isn’t correct.

Absolutely so brilliantly put! I've watched home educators local to me try to discourage other parents from home educating because the mum wanted to still work. I believe it's about showing everyone all the options. Home education is about choice and how it can work for you ✨️

As an adult who was home educated from birth and now home educates my own children, I’ve been part of the community for 40+ years and I agree. The beauty of home education is it allows you to tailor the education to each child, doing what works best for your kids, your family, your situation etc. the whole point is that education does not look the same for every family, or even every child within a family. Listen, respect, accept, don’t judge. There is no one way to do home education, there never has been.

The good thing about home Ed is you can do what suits your own kids and family. No families path will be the same

Why are people so against homeschooling and unschooling ? The school system is so behind . Why would you put your child into a brick building all day to learn outdated things ?

This weekend I was banned from the big national home ed exams group. What did I do? I said (as we all say) that the GCSE system is pretty terrible. That's a huge resource to cut someone off from! My DMs with them were absolutely shocking. Pretty outrageous power trips happening.
I do think that the home ed community has changed dramatically in recent years and brand new home edders are dominating online discourse and it's problematic.

I am pulling my girls out in a few weeks we never had a problem with the school and so thought to respectful enough to have that conversation with them and we were met with "I wouldn't do that if I were you" "they won't socialise" "I'll have to review it" "I'll be giving social services a call" "no meeting is needed to discuss anything thanks"
I was absolutely in shock about how rude this headteacher was as we had never had an issue and our girls are neurodivergent so we wanted a meeting so we had a plan in place for better transition for them and the headteacher has ignored my emails and is so disrespectful now when prior she was absolutely lovely to us all - she pulled my 7 year old out of her lesson to question her and my daughter told us how uncomfortable it made her feel 👎🏼

over these last 6 years we've learnt so much, we've landed in a really productive place which is mostly unschooled but we do THRIVE on routine (2 out of 3 children autistic, one of which WANTS progress charts/stickers etc 🤦🏻♀️🤣) we were guilty of trying to be too 'loose' to fit in with the groups at the beginning and we burnt ourselves out

I've been home educating for 6 years and early on was attached in some of the groups because of how we HE (we're very structured, books only). It left a very bad taste. I no longer engage in any groups or with the community because of the hate I received. It's sad that some people believe that their way is the only "correct" way when they chose to HE because of what their child needs.

I've been home educating for 11 weeks and I've found the home ed groups and sites I have been on SO judgmental 😢 I've removed myself from some of them based on how snobby and judgey some of the more vocal members are. This road is hard enough as a newbie. It's not everyone of course! but the negativity always sounds louder than the positivity 😔 X
