Ever read online threads made by supposed healthcare professionals discussing homosexuality and HIV with disgust, fear mongering, and degrading language instead of proper medical education? That alone already reflects how public health literacy in Indonesia still faces serious structural problems. Rather than focusing on evidence based education such as prevention strategies, safe sex awareness, routine testing, consent, and harm reduction, some discussions instead frame queer people as moral failures or social threats. This kind of rhetoric does not contribute to public health improvement. It only reproduces stigma, misinformation, and hostility within society. The impact becomes visible in the comment sections, where discussions quickly turn into mockery, dehumanization, and fear driven narratives rather than constructive health awareness. From a public health perspective, this is counterproductive because stigma is one of the main barriers preventing people from accessing healthcare services, HIV testing, treatment, and accurate information safely. HIV is not a “gay disease.” It is a human health issue that can affect anyone regardless of sexuality, gender, or background. This is why healthcare ethics emphasize education, non discriminatory communication, and evidence based prevention rather than moral panic. Ironically, countries such as Thailand, which are often underestimated because LGBTQ+ visibility is more socially visible there, demonstrate that open sexual health education and harm reduction approaches are significantly more effective in building awareness and reducing risk than shame based narratives ever could.
