This has nothing to do with a holiday resort. This is about a highly strategic military position. The island sits near the Strait of Otranto, the chokepoint between the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian/Mediterranean route, between Italy and Albania. Whoever controls that area has major influence over movement through one of Europe’s most important maritime corridors.
