Ok, this was the first Lucas Jones poem I ever read and honestly it kind of knocked the wind right out of me and made me cry a long time because I connect with it on such a visceral level. The poet tells you all through his writing "He is just pretending!" He picked up a girl at a bar/pub for a one night stand that turned into a life. He tells us all of the strategies he uses to make his life look normal. He camaphlags his own pain while he became the chameleon everyone else needed to be safe and content. He didn't honor himself by having the courage to live his own life authentically to find his own JOY. Fifty years later he speaks the words out loud, "I've got a confession, all this time I've just been PRETENDING!" He pretends they are one, he pretends to cry, he pretends she is dead BUT she is not.... One of the toughest choices in life is to live a conscious life, to have the courage to be present with yourself and speak and live your truth from your heart. Sorry for the book, I am old, don't waste your life.....🥰❤️
