@feministing: Women need to know that they are more than their bodies, get the mastectomy if it’s recommended, it will save your life #feminism #womensrights

Before my mums mastectomy, I remember listening to the doctors talk to my parents about their ‘new’ sex life (I know awkward idk why the hell I wasn’t removed from the room) and the only thing my dad said was ‘are we seriously talking about this? My wife has cancer and I’d like all the focus to be on that’. He was quite disgusted it was even a topic brought up but it’s such a common question before the surgery that it was now standard.

I got my preventative double mastectomy at 26 and got engaged to my now husband in between my first surgery and my reconstruction (implants). The doctor said he's never seen anyone ever get engaged through the process. He's only ever seen divorces.

For a little bit I was concerned my dad passed on the BRCA1 gene to me, so I was kinda freaking out a little bit about all the cancers my family has had. The guy I was dating at the time looked at me and dedas said “well it’s not like it’s going to affect me” (that’s also how I found out he was planning on breaking up with me since we started dating)

She was a brave woman then and now. She survived brain cancer also. God bless all women who fight for the right to do with their bodies as their Spirit says. 💜

My mom was worried about this. My dad reassured her every step of the way. She ended up losing one breast and every reproductive organ. All of her hair through chemo. He told her how much he loved her and how much it didn’t matter to him bc she was still beautiful and he loved her. I hate to congratulate a fish for swimming and I know that’s bare minimum but I’m really glad that was during my formative years. I chose a man who has cared deeply for me through every hardship. I’m glad that’s the example my daughter is seeing.

same thing happened with my mom…. she got a double mastectomy and got implants but they caused infection so she got them removed and my dad joked the entire time about not being “able to grab anything anymore”

The birth lottery really did me a solid one by dropping me off in an era and country where marriage is optional and getting less important every day. I'm not putting up with that stuff

My dad asked “did she die?“ after her removal and my mom never forgot that

I can’t imagine finding out this way that my husband only sees me as a body.

My Aunt had hers removed, she lived another 21 years. I respect that decision from any woman willing to put her body thru that type of preventative medical procedure.

My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019, after chemo she had surgery in December. She was in the room with two other women. Day before surgery husband of one of them came to visit with divorce papers because he can’t handle her sickness….

this is crazy, like we both are healthy but if anything were to happen my wife is beautiful and I love her for herself, body's change and if something will make you sick then remove it, it shouldn't ever change someone's feelings for the other, I hope all these women i have read about today found better humans cause thats horrible ❤️

Men don’t see women as humans. They see baby makers and sex toys.

A lot of men don’t view women as having as much human value as they do. I guarantee you her ex-husband would hate one of his friend’s ex-wives if she left his friend because he had testicular cancer. Many men view the primary function of their marriages as routine access to their wife’s body. So if they lose sexual interest, what’s the point of being married to her?
