These are good tips - also set up WeChat - all Apps you need are linked through WeChat - including AliPay, DiDi, Train, Meituan (Food Delivery)

These are good tips. I was ready with wechat, but my friend said to setup Alipay as well. I used both without difficulty. Be sure your home bank will not charge high currency conversion fees. (my conversions were free) Also tell them the dates you are travelling. I navigated on foot with Google, but used Amap for driving navigation. Always carry your passport - you need it for tourist attractions and train bookings. I used NordVPN in whisper mode and had no trouble using any of the usual apps - facebook, wechat etc. I used Google and Microsoft translate without problems.
