I was always told to set them in a thick bed of mortar probably a pain to change out but easy to level probably wrong though

I was told after it's installed and ready for caulking fill it with water so it settles or sits down a bit then caulk it and leave it full for 24 hours or however long for things to cure caulking will compress a bit but not stretch much

Best way to do it is to put the tub in place throw a level on it and mark a line on the studs where it’s level then drop it down and measure the distance from the flange to the mark then shim accordingly

As a plumber we put a bed of mortar down and then set the tub in it so that it was solid. The front sat tight to the floor then level the back to that. Those tubs were all rock solid when done.
