By Year 10, I was fluent in English and proud of how far I'd come since arriving in the UK from Bangladesh without speaking a word of the language. One day in English class, I volunteered to read a passage from a novel. I mispronounced a word, and the class laughed. It happened again on another occasion. To most people, it may have seemed insignificant. But as a teenager trying desperately to fit in, those moments had a profound impact on my confidence. I became far more cautious about speaking up and drawing attention to myself. What I've learned since is that a single moment of embarrassment should never be allowed to define your future. The things we fear most are often forgotten by everyone else within minutes, yet we can carry them for years.
