Tokyo Ghoul is set in an alternate Tokyo where humans live alongside ghouls—superhuman beings who must consume human flesh to survive and conceal themselves from public authorities. Ghouls possess enhanced strength, regenerative abilities, and a unique predatory organ called a kagune. Deep hunger triggers a transformation of their eyes into black sclerae with red irises, known as kakugan. A human who receives ghoul organs becomes a half-ghoul, typically manifesting only one eye’s kakugan. The plot centers on Ken Kaneki, an 18-year-old college student who survives a near-deadly date with Rize Kamishiro when a construction accident occurs. During surgery, Rize’s organs are transplanted into Kaneki, turning him into a half-ghoul. Now forced to consume human flesh, he is taken in by ghouls managing a coffee shop called Anteiku, where he struggles to reconcile his lingering humanity with the violent world he's thrust into. He also strives to mask his new identity from his human friend, Hideyoshi Nagachika.
