Fucked it at the end The War on Terror began after the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001, when the terrorist group al-Qaeda hijacked four passenger airliners and carried out attacks against the United States, killing nearly 3,000 people. In response, the United States, supported by allies including the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, and other NATO members, launched Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan on 7 October 2001. The primary objective was to destroy al-Qaeda’s leadership and infrastructure while removing the Taliban government, which had provided sanctuary to al-Qaeda and refused to hand over its leader, Osama bin Laden. Coalition special forces, intelligence agencies, air power, and Afghan anti-Taliban fighters rapidly overthrew the Taliban regime, but many Taliban and al-Qaeda members escaped into remote mountainous regions and across the border into Pakistan. Over the following two decades, the conflict evolved from a conventional military campaign into a prolonged counterinsurgency involving coalition troops, Afghan security forces, and efforts to rebuild Afghanistan’s government and institutions. Major operations targeted terrorist networks, including the raid that killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan in 2011. Throughout the conflict, thousands of coalition personnel, Afghan soldiers, and civilians lost their lives, while millions of Afghans were displaced. Although many terrorist leaders were captured or killed and al-Qaeda’s ability to conduct large-scale international attacks was significantly degraded, the Taliban gradually regained strength and continued its insurgency. Following the withdrawal of U.S. and NATO forces in 2021, the Taliban returned to power, bringing the longest war in American history to an end. The War on Terror also extended beyond Afghanistan through international intelligence cooperation, financial sanctions against terrorist organisations, special operations, drone campaigns, and counterterrorism partnerships across regions including the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia, making it one of the most extensive global security campaigns of the 21st century. #fyp #war #us #pakistan #Uk
