a guide to torturing yourself [transcript: How come your clay behaves so well? i made this with DAS air dry clay and 1. different shapes need different clay textures! Generally harder clay is necessary for bigger/basic shapes, and softer texture is more suitable for smaller details. This doesn't apply to all cases but youll be able to tell which textures you need for different parts with more practice! 2. condition your clay accordingly. To soften it, take fresh clay from the package, add water, knead, and repeat until you get the texture you want. Soft clay + rubbing the surface smooth = key to prevent cracking 3. hardening. if the fresh batch from the package is not hard enough for your need, you can leave it out for around 15 mins to harden it to your liking! In this case im drying this chunk of clay to make a coat 4. smooth out your clay with wet hands. People always ask me how i make the surface so smooth, this is what i do, just rub the surface with a bit of water. Im using soft clay to make shoes. If it gets too sticky you have to dry your hands with tissues and let the piece dry a little bit before lightly pressing on the texture 5. soft clay is easier to shape but also easier to ruin. Sometimes you have to leave the shapes you make from 20 mins - 1 hour before adding in details or sticking it to the main structure so that it holds its shape! For instance, i had to leave these shoes to dry a little bit before going in to cut the bottom part, otherwise it'll get squished between my fingers and the cutter before i can slice it. As another example i had to let this layer of clay dry a little before sticking it to the body so we can have the coat kinda

As another example i had to let this layer of clay dry a little before sticking it to the body so we can have the coat kinda "float" around the legs instead of it sticking and wrapping around them :) 6. rolling pins love hard clay. If you need to use a roller for whatever purpose, softer clay will likely get wrinkly and stick to the roller or your desk. Idk why but harder clay looks seamless being rolled! 7. leave your piece to dry between every step. Generally whenever i cant work on a new part without pressing on a wet part to hold the sturcture i let it dry so it doesn't get ruined. In this case i also needed to sand the cracks before i can add the arms and colar. Likewise, when you cant assemble different parts without ruining the shape just let everything dry first and then assemble them with glue, wet clay, or wire Thats it! I hope its at least a little bit helpful :3. end transcript] #tips #sculpting #clayart #airdryclay
