Same in Spain 🇪🇸, they're saying please more now but it's usually "give me a bag" in a supermarket or "I'll have a coffee" in a café, I still say por favor and gracias, maybe a bit too much, if that's possible 😂

I got a book when I moved to NYC about how to be polite there. It really hammered home that New Yorkers are not interested in filler niceties. Say what you need, get out of the way, close the door.
