Seen snow like this before? On the Transfăgărășan, winter does not simply leave. It retreats reluctantly, meter by meter, under the growl of orange machines chewing through frozen barricades taller than houses. Somewhere above the tree line, near Bâlea Lake, the air still tastes of ice even when the valleys below are drowning in spring heat. Drivers wait for this moment every year like pilgrims, because once the road opens, Romania changes shape entirely. The mountains stop being scenery and become something immense, almost predatory. The strange thing is how alive this road feels even when buried. Avalanches regularly sweep across sections of it during winter, folding snow into compact layers so dense the clearing crews cut through walls five or six meters high. Up here, weather mutates without warning. Dense fog can erase the road in seconds, and sudden June snowfalls are not unusual. The pass cuts through the Făgăraș range, home to some of Romania’s highest peaks, where brown bears roam the forests and glacial lakes sit trapped between black ridges carved thousands of years ago. Long before tourists arrived, shepherds crossed these mountains through brutal old footpaths, sleeping beside sheepfold fires while wolves moved somewhere beyond the dark. Maybe that is why people become obsessed with this place. It is not merely beautiful. It feels temporary, fragile, almost forbidden, as if the mountain only tolerates human presence for a few months before sealing itself shut again beneath storms and silence. Watching these machines claw through the snow, you realize they are not conquering nature at all. They are negotiating with it. Would you drive this road the moment it opens? Or would you rather see it exactly like this, raw and half reclaimed by winter?
