I work at Petco, dude, PLEASE get your animals from somewhere else😭 our animals come from animal mills and it’s genuinely so depressing. Some of them do get health issues, we do have the option to bring them to the vet and get them properly treated which is good, but we can only do so much enclosure wise (bc corporate 😝 thanks guys!!). A good alternative is rescues. It’s not great, but I know FB marketplace, I’ve had customers say people try to get rid of their animals and they’ll do rescues through that. A lot of the time, animals are surprisingly free, at least in my area, especially fish. Also check local shelters obviously. I’d also just recommend doing deep research into ethical breeders. It can be hard, but again, as an employee who genuinely cares about animals, always go the ethical route. There’s always an ethical breeder somewhere out there and if you feel that there isn’t, I’m gonna say the best option is to continue to look for surrenders through rescues, or just don’t get that animal.
