Comment “UC” for the guide that explains this plus 60+ pages of critical insights. They’re not “wrong” about their own application, but the language they’ve used to help you is not helpful. The problem with the UC’s common “interview” advice: 1. Most students have done between 0-2 job interviews, typically for entry-level service positions asking questions very different from the PIQ’s. Why they insist on this comparison reflects an adult disregard for teenage experience. 2. The quoted UCD admissions director continues to say that PIQ’s should be like a conversation. Conversations are far more fluidly structured, and if you took this advice literally, your PIQ’s would look like a mess. Readers expect far more thoughtful rhetorical composition and word choice in writing than they do in speaking, even without being fancy. But the UC still likes to pretend that PIQ’s “aren’t essays.” Yes they are. Look up any successful PIQ you can find online. They’re short, reflective essays with a beginning, middle, and end. 3. A lot of this advice gets simplified to “absolutely no fluff. Focus squarely on accomplishments,” which is also wrong. The UC also explicitly says “make sure to show us your personality—just as you would in real life.” What does the UC mean? Cut the poetic, flowery language. Focus on just a few events and subjects, and allow your personality to show up in your treatment of each topic. Use “I” and “me.”Demonstrate values and skills by describing concrete examples using straightforward language. Stay positive and optimistic. Keep paragraphs on the shorter side. Like this advice? It comes straight from my 60+ page guide to the UC application. Comment “UC” for the link. #collegeadmissions #collegeapplications #collegeapps #classof2027 #piq
