So, Karmelo wasn’t under the tent for 2 minutes without an incident. As soon as Austin, his brother, Hunter, and their friends came in the tent, chaos ensued. Got it.

A lot of people are making this solely about race, and that is part of the problem. Two young lives have been drastically changed, and one of those lives was tragically lost. Everyone deserves a fair trial, and that includes Karmelo. Does Austin deserve justice? Absolutely. Justice should be pursued fairly and based on the facts of the case. At the same time, if we’re being honest about America’s racial climate, many people of color have historically experienced unequal treatment within the justice system. Because of that reality, I can understand why a Black teenager may feel unsafe in certain situations, as safety has not always been guaranteed for Black Americans. What is inappropriate is that a weapon was brought onto school grounds. However, if possession of that weapon did not violate state law, then that would be a school policy violation rather than a criminal offense in itself. If this ultimately proves to be a legitimate case of self-defense, then Karmelo is entitled to the same fair application of justice as anyone else. Regardless of race, this situation should serve as a reminder that keeping our hands to ourselves and avoiding physical altercations can prevent tragedies that cannot be undone.
