this is, unfortunately, why i block almost everyone that behaves this way. i know it’s not necessarily helpful advice, nor is it all that realistic, but it’s just how i’ve had to be lately. which sucks, but i also so does being on the receiving end of the behavior you described

advice like “check on your friends” is sweet in concept and it is good practice for sure but it ignores that a lot of people’s declining mental state is due to massive systems they feel they have no control over—the climate crisis, cost of living, politics etc. A conversation with a friend may help every now and then but we need to turn off the tap instead of just getting more buckets to catch the water

I’ve also noticed since being bought by Oracle that the way tik tok used to order comments so that I saw comments that were more positive and optimistic (yes this platform orders your comments like it orders your FYP) is definitely gone. It looks like Facebook now

I have to take frequent breaks from TikTok it’s very very toxic on here. I will say, I deleted IG and Facebook and completely stopped posting my life to the internet. My nervous system has never been so healthy and calm

i also think people are equating writing comments with writing full essays. like "i just disproved your 5 minute video with 10 words." no lol. so wonderful the internet gave everyone a voice, yet cursed how everyone feels compelled to use it without full thought.

I would only add that: I’m not sure if how we communicate online is a perfect indicator of where we are at as a society, it may just be an indicator of where we are when we are online. We don’t have data of our quality of life offline because there’s no way to track what happens offline. We come here to report but I genuinely feel like being here corrupts things in a way, because it will never simulate real life. We probably have all kinds of moments of loving life and being that part of us when we aren’t even thinking of the internet. But then as soon as we go here those parts of us come out to play. I think it’s just the design of it all. Nobody would act the way they do online in person, and there’s a strong reason for that
