The biggest difference was the type of plantation economy. Caribbean sugar plantations were generally more physically demanding and had higher mortality rates than most plantations in the United States. As a result, Caribbean plantations often depended on a continual importation of enslaved Africans, whereas the enslaved population in the United States eventually grew largely through births. Both systems caused immense suffering and had lasting social, economic, and cultural impacts.

I think we view American Slavery the way we do because it is relatively recent and well documented and studied. But yes, Slavery being hereditary and racial made it especially bad, and the abolishment of slavery didn't erase the social and economic structures to maintain the social order (think Jim Crow laws etc), it didn't fade into history, it evolved into modern institutions.
