I think it's because, by design, Clark has relatable aspects. Similar to Bojack. But just because we can relate to a part of him, and feel empathy in understanding he's not doing well doesn't mean we also can't recognize that he was a often a bad person and didn't want reach forgiveness and growth, he wanted things to be his way or the highway and would do cruel things to maintain that structure.

Clark is such a well written character and the fact he is killed by himself is so symbolic in how he destroyed his own life

I think Captain Clark represents his alcoholism. Addiction is the monster and it has the rank of captain is because he has to obey. Alcohol controls his life. When Clark is told he doesn’t have to change it means he can surrender to his addiction and that's when and why it consumes him.

The wife also has a smaller eye in the middle which could be seen as the fact that she did see what Clark was doing and eventually to save herself left.

Finally someone who doesn't blindly defend Clark because they feel bad over his furniture store ad. Seperate note, I think he would have never become an architect. The way he explains things (still life specifically) feels like he is just faking being metaphorical. Yes, he probably has actually try pursuing it (the box sketches and the way he is able to make a map of the backrooms) but he probably gave up cause it requires a lot of effort and can be frustrating which lead to him complaining then blaming the class he was probably in, resulting in him dropping and claiming he was already an architect and not need a certificate to prove it. This is my theory over it anyway

I definitely see your take on Clark only going to therapy to prove his wife wrong based on how he acts towards Mary, between how he keeps bringing up how HE pays for the house, or HE works or everything HE does, or even when hes telling Mary about the Backrooms. When Mary talks to him about what he found in the therapy session, even though she's not saying "You're wrong" to him, Clark gets offended and leaves in a huff to collect evidence and even says "You're going to owe me a fucking apology". I imagine he said something similar to his wife when he started going to therapy

The opposite is also true btw. Some people get so bent out of shape when your favourite character from a movie is the villain or a terrible person, because they can't understand that you like a character because they are interesting and well written, not because you have some parasocial internal connection to the characters personality

as bad as he is, and after hearing you raising some good points as to why he is even worse, I still think that although he is bad, you can still feel pity for him and still relate to him on a certain level, atleats the sentiment of "I don't think I want to change" is familiar to me, and I might be wrong, but it seems as if he recognizes that he is bad at the end, and that he needs to change, but he doesn't want to go through the hard part of it all, which is still not good but better and more understandable than if we take the line of "i dont want to change" at face value , but i might just be humanising him because I kinda of relate to him, though if not at that level, please excuse my poor writing and if you have anything to add or to contradict me on, please do
