@courtneeypark: the model minority myth was born in the 1960s, when the NYT published a piece called “Success Story: Japanese American Style”. this was barely 20 years after the same country forced them into camps. and also funnily enough, published RIGHT after the civil rights act was passed. hint: the article and the growing model minority myth wasn’t a compliment to asian americans. it was a purposeful attack against black america, and asian americans were just an easy tool. “look at how quiet and hardworking those asians are, so the current system must work! and your struggle isn’t because of systemic racism. it’s your own fault!” 😐💀 as if the immigration law in 1965 that allowed more asians to immigrate, wasn’t in direct correlation to the civil rights act being passed and due to the work of black activists. (more on this in a future video) once again - we were (and continue to be) used as a rebuttal to black civil rights, and unfortunately too many of us bought into it. so if you’re asian, and your gut reaction is to think “well black people hurt asians too” when you hear stories like Chow’s murder of Cyrus - that’s a trap. it’s not rooted in actual reality, because studies show that 3 in 4 anti-asian hate crimes are actually committed by white people. but you don’t talk about that in the same breath. justice for Cyrus Carmack-Belton and his family. they’re filing a new civil court against Chow and i hope his life is given the verdict and honor he deserves. #modelminoritymyth #cyruscarmackbelton #asianamerican
