Theoretically im all for it practically there’s already cases of potential malpractice in implementation within Canada where MAID is more heavily accepted and it makes me exceedingly hesitant to approve it in our even more broken system in the US

I fully agree- MAID is about death with dignity, but as our systems are currently designed, it could easily become exploitative and a tool of oppression.

MAiD is very specifically a Canadian legal framework, and track 2 does NOT even require a foreseeable death as eligibility. Track 1 also has NO quantified definition of what “foreseeable” means. It does NOT say 6 months.

it’s such a slippery slope. i would love for it to be feasible but when health care systems are stretched so thin it definitely opens the doors for pressure from pen-pushers to approve all MAID requests on all terminally ill patients. all health care decisions should be person centred and free of coercion or gaslighting but unfortunately at the moment that’s just not the case.

Yeah Canada’s implementation of MAID has made me more skeptical of the legal and economic framework around how we allow for medical aid in dying, even though fundamentally I support a person’s right to determine how and when they die.

My mom has access to MAID during her hospice stint. She never used it but she said having it available to her brought a huge comfort to her knowing she wasn’t going to be forced to suffer.

Eloquently spoken, it’s absolutely a systemic problem. No one should have to suffer if they chose otherwise.

Harm could also be described as prolonging suffering.

I mean… the thought of this as a retirement plan, unironically, has occurred to me. And that’s… horrifying. So yes, definitely a slippery slope. (For context I’m a divorced teacher with a ton of student debt)

And in other countries the provider or nurse can administer life ending medication as part of MAID. The US states that have MAID options they’re very limited and lots of hoops to jump

hurricane Katrina showed us that we need so many better systems in so many parts of life, living, & taking care of one another & our loved ones, pets included.

I work in hospice and still feel so very torn on this. I would 100% sit with and provide support for someone who chooses the way they die. But I still have such conflicted feelings on it.

I watched my mother suffer and lose herself over the course of 8 years with Alzheimer's. anyone who has witnessed this type of slow painful death knows that helping someone to die with dignity is truly a kindness

I'm 100% supportive of the concept of MAID and dying with dignity but we live in such a hellscape I fear it just makes it easier for the government to kill disabled people :( there's tons of cases in Canada of people being denied funding for eg a home aide but being approved for MAID

exactly! MAID is ethical by itself, but it cannot be ethically implemented in the current system.

Do no harm doesn’t mean keep them alive at all costs. Sometimes avoiding harm is allowing a choice or ending suffering.

My dad took maid and I wouldn’t change a thing with it very peaceful and he was very clear for a long time that he wanted something like that if he ever was terminally ill he sang his and my moms wedding song and just drifted away

I am a phlebotomist, most of my patients are either very old, very sick or both. I have had more patients than I can count literally beg to be allowed to die. MAID should be a human right.
