Newest little fox came in today! Today was one of the busier days we had experienced. 23 phone calls, 6 people texting, surprise USDA visit for our exhibitor permit (this happens 2x a year and we never get a heads up they are ment to be a surprise), 8 animal intakes, and unfortunately a euthanasia appointment for a hydrocephalus fox kit. All of this on top of feeding the 55 animals currently in our care! Oh and I worked a 12 hour shift last night. Have you figured out when I slept today? Hydrocephalus if you aren’t aware is a congenital condition that is most commonly seen in red foxes (in the wildlife world) although any animal can be born with it. It is the abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the brain’s ventricular system, increasing pressure and causing brain damage. Symptoms include seizures, severe headaches, pressure, vision problems, circling and a dome shaped head. It also can leave the fontanelle to not fully close. In a wild animal there is no treatment, in domestic animals a VP shunt can be placed but it is not possible for a wild animal to get a VP shunt and be released into the wild. VP shunts can malfunction and we don’t want to have those genetics being passed on to future foxes. There is short term treatment options but those only help with symptoms they do not cure the condition. As soon as treatment stops the fluid will continue to build up in the brain. So as much as we hate it, euthanasia for these fox kits is the only option to ease their suffering. Thankfully my day did not end with this euthanasia case but instead a new healthy orphaned fox was welcomed into our care! #feisty #rescue #wildlife #hydrocephalus #fox
