The Cha Cha method, as I’ll now be referring to it, will always ‘work’. That doesn’t mean it’ll always be the best choice for every multiplication. The further away our numbers are from a ‘base’ like 100, the bigger the differences become. At some point, multiplying the differences is worse than doing the original multiplication 🫠. But let’s have a look at the beautiful algecadabra behind it 🪄 We can write any two numbers near 100 as (100-A) and (100-B). For example 98 is 100-2 and 97 is 100-3. Multiplying these numbers gives (100-A)(100-B). Let’s expand that bracket: 10000-100B-100A+AB Now we can pull out a factor of 100: 100(100-B-A) + AB The bit in the bracket, subtracting both differences from 100, has the same effect as taking one difference from the other number. If our numbers are 98 and 97, 100-2-3 is 95 which is the same as 98-3 or 97-2. Multiplying by 100 makes space for 2 extra digits. Which we fill by multiplying the differences, AxB 😍 👉PS If you like the way I explain things, you might like our books and resources, covering topics like multiplication, division, fractions, and more. We’ve also got a full video course and bookmark set covering more mental maths techniques like Cha Cha. With the same laid-back style, easy-to-understand explanations, and great design, our resources put the joy into learning. Find them on our website or comment MATHEMAGIC for a link to shop. “After following Dominique from Sums of Anarchy on Instagram for the past few years, I finally decided to purchase the Complete Guide to Times Tables, and I only wish I’d done it sooner.” ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “My 8yo is hooked!” ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “I’m so excited about how colourful and engaging this book is.
