Replying to @💌 Apple is one of the orphaned Red fox kits I took in this year whose clinical symptoms and appearance pointed (shouted) toward hydrocephalus. For the last decade+ that I’ve taken in these cases, to put it simply, there has been no hope for these babies. The standard protocol has been euthanasia upon intake. But that has never sat well with me, so I’ve been on a mission to 1) see if there’s any way to still give them a chance at life, even if that may end up being in a permanent sanctuary setting as educational ambassadors, and 2) gather enough data to be able to dig deeper into the “why” behind the increasing number of these cases. Last year, an incredible and kind veterinary neurosurgeon, Dr. Scanlon, agreed to start working with my tiny neurological fox patients. She was a missing puzzle piece that I needed, because prior to networking with her, no neurologist I had spoken to had been willing to potentially put one of these wild animals in their MRI machine for me. She said yes to seeing a sweet male kit named Sunshine - and because of him, we ultimately achieved our first groundbreaking hydrocephalus diagnosis in a live Red fox kit via MRI. Fast forward to this year when Apple arrived to me as a wildlife rehab intake, I didn’t have the highest hopes for her. She was already fairly symptomatic upon intake, including exhibiting seizures. A quick road trip, exam, and ultrasound with Dr. Scanlon showed the presence of excess fluid. But, because we had been able to get her symptoms under control with medication while maintaining her comfort (utmost priority), I refused to consider her a lost cause. I still saw value in her sweet little life. These intakes break my heart every single year. And truthfully, every loss makes me momentarily question if I’m strong enough to do this over and over again - especially because they are all so sweet. It’s actually one of the biggest red flags that brings them into rehab in the first place - the condition affects their brain in a way that blurs their ability to recognize friend vs. foe. But still, I choose to let them experience life for as long as I can confidently maintain their comfort. My soul doesn’t feel at ease taking that away if they can still experience comfort and contentment - even if it’s only usually for a couple of weeks max. At this point, we haven’t been in a frantic rush to get an MRI for Apple before funds allow, because Apple is clearly responding to her current medical management. Right now, imaging would confirm diagnosis and continue building the dataset we’re working toward - but we also know that if her condition takes a turn, having that imaging already done could be the difference in whether surgery is even an option in time. [We are creeping closer to our next Red Fox Neurology Fund campaign goal, which will fund Apple’s advanced imaging - thank you so much to the 229 supporters of our campaign thus far!] Although we now have neurosurgeons willing to perform surgery if appropriate (CRAZY EXCITING THAT’S EVEN ON THE TABLE), it’s not something we can consider until she’s at least 12 weeks old. BUT GUYS, that’s only about another month away! And that feeling you’re hopefully experiencing right now - if you love and are rooting for Apple the way myself and my family is - is exactly why I’m pouring everything I can into this. I’m incredibly grateful to have this platform to share this on, because the support and love you guys show TRULY encourage me - thank you, thank you, thank you. 🍏
