I can’t speak for everyone, but from our perspective, it’s mostly a mix of elitism and malinchismo (the internalized belief in our culture that anything from the outside is inherently better). When you remind them they aren’t white, what they actually hear is, 'You aren’t good enough, you're lower quality.' I’ve also noticed that for those born in the US to Latino parents, there's this struggle of not feeling 'Latino enough' or 'American enough,' which definitely adds to the identity crisis.
