can I just ask how you make your patterns? I love making plushies of my own, but buying new patterns alongside fabric every other week is starting to get a little expensive 😅

I'm curious, why do people use plastic for sewing? Is it to avoid getting caught up in fur or make it smoother or something

I CANNOT stress enough do NOT take more than 1-2 months of work when you are a newer freelancer because your prices will be changing as your quality and process upgrades. You will regret not increasing your prices as you notice your hourly pay decreasing due to how long the work is taking!

Heck yeah, 100% especially that last bit is sooo overlooked. Weight training has pretty much eliminated back and wrist pain for me and I really can't stress it enough for other artists! Glad to see others talking more about it too.n

Please please please learn how to do good customer service and communication, whether that’s using skills from a previous/current job or going out and seeking advice online. Talking to people professionally and in a timely manner, especially when money is changing hands, is a skill that needs to be learned and practiced just like any other skill. A big chunk of artist “beware” posts could’ve been solved with better customer service skills.

I have SO many thoughts I love this posts! I do a lot of different mediums because I think it’s fun and over the past 4-5 years I went from being a full time worker to a SAHM. I am NOT a professional or freelance artist, I am more of a hobby artist, but it’s not from lack of trying. I realized the moment the art becomes a job and I am obligated it finish I drag my feet and struggle. I’m personally just not built for it, which is okay in my opinion! I learned this through digital commissions and the only way to really know is to try… so my biggest recommendation there is to not spend the money until that com is DONE so refund can be quick and painless if it’s not for you. This is a little different/harder for physical coms if you have to buy supplies, I don’t have tips for that unfortunately. My next thought is more of a fun way to practice, but artfight is in July! If you’re unaware artfight is basically a fanart game where you pick a team and “attack” or “defend” (so draw art for people on the other team or your own) for points. Physical (art) attacks are allowed as well! It lasts 1 month so you can see how well you stick to a deadline, stay motivated, etc! Personally I’m setting a goal of making 2 physical medium attacks to sort of test myself and have a solid goal. I really like everything Naz said too! Lastly as a buyer of art as well and someone who’s probably too involved in online spaces, the not taking on too much work is really detrimental. Not just for your mental health but for your brand, it can be hard to recover if you are labeled a scammer or poor business because you are blowing through your deadlines consistently or not being able to provide promised standards because you’re rushing through to keep them. There are people whose art I adore that I’d never commission again or in the first place because of stuff like this, because it’s not worth the hassle unfortunately. You sort of have to start things slow to see what you can handle, and be ready to pump the breaks if you need to. It’s definitely not always easy, even if you love what you do!
