He just needs a productive hobby. Everyone should have four: 1 to exercise your mind, 1 to exercise your body, 1 to exercise your creativity, and 1 to exercise your soul. I run a pretty complex homelab server/network, race sailboats, design and build my own electronics, and am highly engaged in local politics. I could retire today and my wife would not consider me a loser if I just put the time into those things instead of video games.

I mostly agree with him, it's his retirement so he should be able to do what he wants to, between his responsibilities. but if he didn't previously establish this with his wife, I can understand her being upset with this, because this is a pretty significant departure in personality. I'm not sure what she expected, but it's not unreasonable to be displeased with an unexpected change.

I retired at 40 with $3.5M. Got bored and started working at startups on contracts. My dividends today are paying me $100k a year. I make another $80k working tech contracts because I enjoy it. My wife and I moved to Asia and barely spend $50k a year, and we travel and vacation 4 times a year. I'm 52, and will retire completely at 55. My wife wants me to retire and enjoy life.
