“Are you black? Or did you put something on to be black?” 😯 That’s definitely not something I ever thought I’d hear about my skin colour in Sri Lanka, where so many people look so much like me. “Your colour is different,” said a man who looked about the same shade as me. 🤔 Along with that came a steady stream of guesses, assumptions, and observations about my skin colour, race, nationality, and identity. “Indian?” “Sri Lankan?” “Black American?” “African?” “Tamil?” It felt like my skin colour always entered the conversation before I did. Sometimes curious, sometimes awkward, and sometimes genuinely hard to respond to. The thing is, I don't think most of these interactions came from a place of negativity. Perhaps it was simply people trying to understand me, place me, connect with me, or make sense of someone who… didn't quite fit into a box they were familiar with. Maybe I am a little harder to place. 🧐 But spending weeks hearing people's guesses about my identity made me think about how much appearance shapes the way we understand and place one another. Skin colour. Features. Clothes. Accents. Sometimes those things explain a lot. Sometimes they explain very little. Because identity is layered, shaped by history, migration, culture, region, language, and most importantly our individual lived experiences. Very rarely just down to how we look like or where people assume we’re from. 🙏🏾 #srilanka #darkskin #blackbeauty
