In 1947, area code 201 became the very first area code assigned under AT&T's new nationwide telephone numbering system. At the time, it covered the entire Garden State. Then, in 1951, Englewood Mayor M. Leslie Denning placed the nation's first customer-dialed long-distance call without an operator, reaching Mayor Frank Osborne in Alameda, California.
