When I was younger I thought my dad was the most practically smart person I know. The other day I had to explain to him that mixing baking soda and vinegar just makes basically salt water and not some magic decreasing chemical. He did not believe me.

My parents always preached financial responsibility to me only to find out as an adult they're almost 200k in debt. My dad had a great paying job, I have no idea how they fumbled that so bad

I am thirty-two years old (damn it hurts to read that) and I can say that I've suffered quite a bit in my life from unnecessary expectations imposed by my parents that only caused me to struggle, all because I believed that I was being smarter than more rebellious or independent-minded peers by doing what my parents told me to do. Kids, if you have strict parents with outdated views on things, listen to your own intuition. If you feel like you know better, or what they're telling you to do isn't what you know you want for yourself, here's the honest truth: they really don't "actually know better". Do your own thing and lie to your parents. It sucks, but not every relationship is built for total honesty. You only get one adolescence. If you don't do what you want with your life, you will have the displeasure of waking up one day at my age and just regretting a lot of your life. Nobody ever thought enough to pull me aside and explain any of this to me when I was eighteen and I really wish someone had.
