People say trauma gets released like it's something stuck in a pipe. Clear the blockage, it flows through, you're done. That's not how it works, and treating it that way usually makes it worse. Trauma isn't an object. It's a reaction that formed at a specific age, to protect a kid who didn't have other options. The reaction doesn't dissolve because an adult, years later, decided it's inconvenient now. Here's the actual mechanism, as far as anyone can measure it. You don't remove the reaction. You update who it's protecting. The nervous system is still guarding a six-year-old who needed guarding. It doesn't know that person grew up. I don't know exactly where this becomes conscious versus automatic, and neither does most of the research I've read. What's measurable is the input: you have to address the young version directly, not the adult problem it turned into. That means naming what happened to the kid, out loud or on paper, without the adult's summary attached. Not "I had a rough childhood." The actual scene. What he needed and didn't get. Do that consistently and the reaction stops firing at full strength, not because it's gone, because it's finally aimed at something that happened twenty years ago instead of something happening right now. This is slower than people want to hear. Weeks of naming the same scene, not once, closer to dozens of times, before the automatic reaction downgrades from full alarm to something survivable. ... Nothing gets released in one sitting. The nervous system needs proof, repeated, that the danger is over. That proof is the actual work. Everything else is a metaphor for it.
I am the best version of myself. Self-love and self-care truly help one grow. It’s so important to nurture ourselves.
