🩷 SMEAR TEST AWARENESS 🩷 Before we start, I aren’t posting this to overshare my private life, only to spread awareness and make other girls like me feel a little bit less alone and scared. I went for my first ever smear test in March this year, if you didn’t know, you don’t have to wait until you hit 25 to have your smear, you should receive a letter from your GP 6 months before your birthday inviting you to make an appointment. My results came through in April to say that I had an abnormal smear result, something which is actually extremely common. However as common as it is, you still panic and all you can think is ‘what if I have cancer’. I had an appointment to visit the hospital for a procedure called a colposcopy; a speculum is inserted into the vagina to open it up and examine the cervix. Dye is applied to the cervix which will then highlight any abnormal cells. It doesn’t hurt at all, and feels like a smear which is also a comfortable, non painful procedure. Abnormal cells were still showing after the dye was applied so a biopsy was then taken there and then. Again, this didn’t hurt and only felt like a small pinch. All whilst this was happening, you can watch on a screen at the side of you and it really is fascinating what the human body can do and what doctors can discover. I now have to wait 4-6 weeks for the results to come back to see if the cells are pre cancerous or if no further action is needed. If they are, I may have to go to the hospital for a procedure called LLETZ where the cells will be burnt off to prevent cervical cancer from occurring. It’s a scary process, but one that happens to so many women and is so common. I’m sure it will be nothing, but I’m glad something is being done. The age in the U.K. for women to have their smear is 25. You can get a driving licence, drink, smoke, have a career, a baby ALL before you can get a quick 5 minute smear test. Mad right? 🤯 I want to try and make a change, so I have started a petition which if it gets 10,000 signatures, the government need to respond. Others have tried, but I want to too.
