On This Day, 572 years ago The Siege of Constantinople, led by Sultan Mehmed II, lasted for 53 days, from 6 April to 29 May 1453. The defenders, vastly outnumbered, included Byzantines and their few remaining allies, under the command of Emperor Constantine XI Palaiologos. In the early hours of 29 May, the Ottomans launched their final and most devastating assault. Waves of Janissaries and artillery fire broke through the weakened walls. The defenders fought bravely, but the city could no longer hold. Constantine XI, the last Byzantine emperor, refused to flee. He is said to have declared: “I will not abandon the city. I will die with my people.” He cast aside his imperial robes and died fighting in the streets. His body was never identified. That same morning, the Ottomans breached the gates. With the fall of Constantinople, the final chapter of the Roman Empire came to an end, after more than a thousand years of history. Church bells rang one final time. Citizens prayed inside Hagia Sophia, moments before the doors were broken down.
