The 2 cups of heavy cream costs more than just buying a 16oz container of sour cream.

For the ones crying you can just buy it cheaper : You can make sour cream from a gallon of whole milk as well ( Homemade Sour Cream RecipeIngredients: 2/3 cup whole milk, 1/3 cup melted unsalted butter, 1 tbsp white vinegar.Step 1: Blend milk on high speed while slowly pouring in melted butter. Blend 1–2 minutes to create cream.Step 2: Pour into a jar. Let cool completely to room temperature.Step 3: Stir in vinegar. Cover jar with a paper towel and rubber band.Step 4: Leave on the counter for 24 hours to thicken.Step 5: Seal with a lid and refrigerate 4 hours to fully set into spoonable sour cream (Using 1 gallon of whole milk, you will yield exactly 1.5 gallons (24 cups) of homemade sour cream.) and you don’t need to turn all of it into sour cream u can also make yogurt -cheese-butter,ilk-butter from a gallon of milk so.. divide it up = The 1-Gallon Milk Division & Yields🥛 Yogurt: Use 6 cups of milk → Yields 6 cups regular yogurt (or 3 cups if strained thick)🥣 Sour Cream: Use 4 cups of milk (+ 2 cups butter) → Yields 6 cups sour cream🥛 Buttermilk: Use 6 cups of milk → Yields 6 cups buttermilk

We have really lost the art of using up ingredients on hand and we need to find it again with how bad this economy is. I use to be like all the other comments saying how expensive it is to make things at home like this. Yes, if one day you decide to make sour cream and go buy all the ingredients to do so instead of just buying it pre made it WILL cost more. We use home made recipes to save money by getting multiple uses out of ingredients verses one use and discarding the left overs. For example I can make Alfredo tonight and I of course used heavy cream for that... I am making tacos tomorrow and my husband loves sour cream with his tacos so instead of buying heavy cream for Alfredo and sour cream for taco night I buy just heavy cream and make sour cream out of the remaining heavy cream that I didn't need. Stop throwing ingredients away that come with more than you need for a meal, use them to contribute to other meals. It isn't life changing... it isn't going to give you a retirement fund or a down payment on a house.. but it will stretch your grocery haul longer and let you treat yourself more often if you're lucky enough or have more meals if you're not as lucky.

You can also do this with a little bit of cultured buttermilk instead of vinegar and it will be probiotic.

I love the comments of "well store bought is cheaper" or "but you still using store bought ingredients" when neither of those points are mentioned. maybe....one needs sour cream and cant get to a store but has these ingredients to make it. hmmm....what about simple convenience switch?

Genuine question. What happens if you add the salt along with the vinegar? Why add it after?
