Watching this made me really emotional. I’m from both sides. One Greek speaking Cypriot parent and one Turkish speaking Cypriot parent. Spent most of my time on the “illegal” side growing up and so did my Greek speaking Cypriot dad. My mum was displaced to his original village with her family so its even weirder and bittersweet for my dad. When he and my mum got married and they’d travel to Cyprus during summer, my dad was initially hesitant to cross to his original village where my mum’s family were now living. As you can imagine, he probably felt really weird & sad to revisit a place he used to call home as a child and was forced to escape from. But now, after so many yearly visits, mingling with the Turkish speaking Cypriot people from my mum’s village, he’s a respected and loved member of that community too. A confusing but beautifully unique experience.

Accidentally landed in northern Cyprus for a holiday and had to pay over 100 dollars for a taxi down to southern Cyprus, drove through the buffer zone it was insane

I stayed here for a summer doing research on how space is perceived post war/invasion and also worked at the Home for Cooperation in then buffer zone. Met so many people who had to go to either side and have never been back to their original homes. It honestly was one of my favorite trips and I’ve learned so much. People were very sweet and so nice.
