@dougsingsacoustic: I’ve mentioned before that I had ‘The Cream of Eric Clapton’ on cassette as a kid, a compilation that made this little boy into a big fan. Around the age of ten, I decided to get whatever his latest album was, which turned out to be his 1989 blues-pop masterpiece ‘Journeyman’. I got home, popped my new cassette into my ghetto blaster and pored over the fold-out liner notes. I remember thinking Eric looked so damn cool leaning against a wall in a loose pale-grey suit and yellow shirt, dark sunglasses on and hands in his pockets. I still think that. Song after song, the music did not fail to deliver. Pretending, Anything for Your Love, Bad Love … and then I heard Running on Faith. Written by Jerry Lynn Williams, who wrote or co-wrote five songs on ‘Journeyman’, Running on Faith is a gospel-blues song about keeping hope alive and yearning for connection. It moved me then and has stayed with me my whole life.
