@pursuitofwonder: There is psychological condition known as alien hand syndrome where an individual’s hand takes on a life of its own.   The hand does not merely move at random, but rather, the hand seems to actually act as if it has its own conscious will directed by a distinct, separate mind with intentions and desires.   Individuals with this condition can find their hand carrying out goal-oriented tasks without their awareness, understanding, or direction. The hand might take an object out of a drawer, unzip a jacket, or open a window. Even more strangely, the hand is sometimes known to do the opposite of what the individual wants to do or just did with their other hand.   For instance, the alien hand may open the same window that the individual just intentionally closed with their other hand.   Though this condition is understood to often be caused by trauma, strokes, tumors, aneurysms, or brain surgery, there is no known cure for the condition, and it is largely not understood.   We are all more alien to ourselves than we like to admit and can likely understand. #philosophy #philosophytok #psychologyfacts
