from my ANTH classes i've always been interested in the ural mountains. honestly one of the most interesting parts of europe to me because of their historical association with the early uralic-speaking peoples, like the ancestors of modern finnish and hungarian speakers, who unlike most of their european neighbors speak languages from an entirely different language family rather than the indo-european family. and of course it's in russia 💔 it's actually insane how incredible russia is. every interesting thing i learn about europe that i genuinely end up wanting to dig deeper into somehow ends up being in russia. a while ago it was the caucasus because i was reading about circassians and cherkess peoples, then it was siberia, then i found out the longest river in europe, the volga, is entirely within russia. then there's lake baikal, the deepest lake in the world and the largest by volume of freshwater. and on top of that it's the largest country in the world and the largest country in europe. russia is genuinely so peak and beautiful.
