@k9s.org: June 6 is National Naloxone Awareness Day. A day created to reduce stigma around carrying naloxone—and to remind people that being prepared can change outcomes in seconds. In this video, a K9 handler shares something simple but powerful: he carries two doses of Narcan—one for himself, and one for his dog. Because exposure doesn’t only happen to people. Working dogs can be at risk too, especially around substances like fentanyl. This day is observed on June 6 in honor of Victoria Siegel, and the moment that continues to drive awareness and prevention efforts forward nationwide. Preparedness isn’t fear. It’s responsibility. #NaloxoneAwarenessDay #k9unit #policedog #workingdogs #drugbust
Did he say he takes Narcan preemptively? Because that’s not how Narcan works

that would honestly be the most terrifying area to be for 30 mins. narcanning a Belgium malinois is like giving it crack. narcan is no joke and literally brings people back from the dead in seconds. I can only imagine what the carnage that little fur missile would cause

as a vet assistant at a clinic that sees active police k9s and has to do surgery on them... we make sure the handlers are there when they wake up because when some wake up, they go after "the bad guy" and a handler there giving commands will keep everyone safer.. even if the k9 thinks the handler is the bad guy initially. it's an intense situation.. so I can only imagine narcan on one 😳

He should really carry more as the dogs smaller so if it’s a large amount two might be needed maybe 3 and some people need two doses

Yall over here fighting in the comments when the dog probably is able to do scent searching. If there’s enough fentanyl on the thing the dog is sniffing to track the scent the dog could be down pretty damn fast. For the officer it’s not gonna be as easy to get it, but it could still happen. Some people’s reasoning here is like saying you shouldn’t have a fire extinguisher in your house because a fire MIGHT not happen. It’s a safety precaution if anything gets bad. 🤦♂️

K9 are always sniffing. If the smallest dose is on the coffee table or rug or anywhere. During a raid or search or whatever there doing. The dogs will most likely sniff it up. Humans to but humans are completely different on exposure and amount.

i love that as ems providers we now follow nero’s law which allows us to provide aid and transport to a working K9 officer if they are injured in the line of duty. we have handlers come to the station to train us and teach us about their dogs and how to manage them. As a dog lover and owner i wish i didn’t have to learn the statistics of ROSC for dogs but i am thankful as a dog lover and a paramedic to have the skills and knowledge to provide aid for a K9 officer 🫶

I hope that’s a standard operating procedure for handlers and their K9’s. And yeah Narcan and working dogs means anyone that isn’t mom/dad generally gets bit. PSA, similar to a seizure. That initial wake up is very jarring, they’re gunna need some space to recognize who what when where.

Can’t imagine giving Narcan to a Maligator. They charge from 0% to 100% in 2 minutes, then operate on fur missle mode 23 hours 58 minutes a day. Cant imagine what happens after Narcan 😂

Honestly, I’d never thought of this angle before especially with the dog’s reaction after narcan. Thank you for teaching me something new today, very much appreciated.
